Cooling can account for half the energy cost in operating the typical data center.
It is critically important to maintain proper temperature and humidity range for IT
equipment to operate reliably. However, most facilities lack rack level environmental
monitoring and end up operating their facilities at much lower temperatures than necessary
in order to have a safe “buffer” to account for variations from rack to rack.
In spite of this wasteful practice, hot spots go undetected. The solution is to monitor
the air intake at each rack to assure the proper ranges are being met.
